Norman Parkinson



 Norman Parkinson was born in 1913 and was a well-known fashion photographer in the 20th century. He was born in London and educated in Westminster School. He began his career in 1931 as an apprentice to the court photographers, Speight and Sons Ltd. In 1934 he opened his own studio together with Norman Kibblewhite, in London's Piccadilly. From 1935 to 1940 he worked for Harper's Bazaar and Bystander magazines. During the Second World War he served as a reconnaissance photographer over France for the Royal Air Force. In 1947 he married the actress and model Wenda Rogerson. From 1945 to 1960 he was employed as a portrait and fashion photographer for Vogue. From 1960 to 1964 he was an Associate Contributing Editor of Queen magazine.
From his early days as a photographer up to his death he remained one of the foremost British portrait and fashion photographers. He revolutionised the world of British fashion photography in the '40s by bringing his models from the rigid studio environment into a far more dynamic outdoor setting. Parkinson took over. When Cecil Beaton (The Royal Photographer) died, Norman Parkinson took over for him. The portraits of Princess Anne and Queen Elizabeth Queen Mother were by him.

 




Irving Penn 

Born June 16th 1917 in New Jersey, an American Photographer known for his fashion photography, portraits and still life. His career includes work for Vogue magazine and independent advertising for clients. His work has been exhibited internationally, and continues to inform the art of photography. Penn attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art in 1934 until 1938 to study drawing, painting, graphics, and industrial arts. Eventhough Penn was best known for this fashion photography he did some still lifes of food, bones, bottles, metal, and found objects; and photographic travel essays. Irving Penn was one of the first photographers to pose subjects against a simple grey or white backdrop and he effectively used this simplicity.

David Bailey


Born 2nd Januray 1938 in London. Hw started his career doing fashion and portrait photography in 1959 and is still going today. Bailey had left school when he had turned 15 years old to become a copy boy at the Fleet Street offices of the Yorkshire Post. He went through loads of dead end job to then to be called in to work for National Service in 1956, serving the Royal Air Force in Singapore in 1957.
In 1958 he pursued his career in photography. In 1959, Bailey became a photographic assistant at the John French studio, and in May 1960, he was a photographer for before being contracted as a fashion photographer for British Vogue magazine later that year. He also undertook a large amount of freelance work.
