tech task 3

soft box

A soft box is a type of light used in a photographic studio. The soft box is an attachment from the flash and it makes shadows and lighting look more soft rather than harsh lights and shadows that the flash would create. All the various soft light types create even and diffused light. A "soft box" is an enclosure around a bulb comprising reflective side and back walls and a diffusing material at the front of the light.

beauty dish

A beauty dish is a photographic lighting device that reflects light from the flash and a softbox towards the focal point or subject area. It gives the image a wrapped and contrasted look creating a dramatic effect.

There are two main differences between a beauty dish and a regular reflector. Beauty dishes are significantly larger than normal reflectors. In one equipment line, reflectors range from a 7 to 16 inch diameter, whereas a beauty dishes are about 22 inches in diameter.

Another difference is that beauty dishes have an opaque cover directly over the front of the light source, preventing the light from hitting the subject directly, giving the image a more soft lighting than what would come from a standard reflector.

 standard reflector dish

In photography and cinematography, a reflector dish is something that is an  improvised or specialized  reflective surface used to redirect light towards the subject.

There are different types of reflector dishes such as the lamp reflector. A lamp reflector looks similar to a lampshade, these reflectors are connected to an artificial light, e.g; a filament bulb or a flash to direct and shape scattered light. There are a large number of variants which are: spherical (gives it a short-sides and broad spread of light) and parabolic which provides a tighter, parallel beam of light.

Another type of reflector dish is a broad reflector. It is also known as a plane reflector or bounce board, this type of reflector bounces light onto the subject using a source of light. it also controls shadows and highlights the subject. A very common example of this technique is using the traditional umbrella reflector.

snoot

A snoot is a tube that fits over a studio light or a portable flash which allows the photographer to control the direction of the light and radius of the light beam. These could be conical, cylindrical or rectangular. Snoots can make the subject appear isolated when using a flash. They help to stop light from spilling.

soft light

Soft light refers to a light that tends to wrap around objects, making the shadows on the subject look soft. Soft light can also reduce the amount of shadows in an image and will fill the light. It will also make the subject appear more beautiful and youthful by reducing imperfections.

hard light

Hard light however, does not make shadows more soft and reduced, it will make more harsher shadows and lines. This is often used when photographing things that require a more dramatic and dark tones effect.
